How-To: Get Traffic to Your Site Overnight

I know I’ve written about this before but a lot of people have asked me to start from the beginning as they are new to this list/blog. For you folks, I have been teaching my newsletter readers how to get a lot of traffic to their web site by utilizing social media such as Twitter and Facebook. We’ve seen increases to sites of some of our readers as high as 400% literally overnight. It kind of puts search engine optimization to shame. It’s pretty easy and providing you have a little bit of time to do it yourself, it’s free.

Today we’ll start with Twitter, from the beginning.

1. Sign up at Twitter.com and login to your new account.

2. Click on “Settings” in the top menu and make sure that your web site URL is filled out where it says “More info URL”. At this point you can also choose to change the design and utilize a branded background and use your logo as your picture. It gives your Twitter page an overall branding and flow and makes sure that people cannot miss what it is you do or sell.

3. Sign up for an account at SocialOomph – fill out the form. It is o.k. to ignore anything you may not understand such as bit.ly API key an such. Activate your account when you get the activation email. You can then login to the account and in the sidebar select “Social Accounts” and then choose “Add New Account” followed by “Add Twitter”. Enter in the user name and password from your Twitter account on the next page and scroll down past the red text. Make sure you check “Automatically send a welcome message to new followers.” Then in the “Send This Message” text area, write a welcome message to new followers of your Twitter account including a link to your web site. All you have to do to do this is put in your web site URL starting with http://www. – you only want to make this 140 characters long. This message will be sent out to all of your new followers, prompting some of them to visit your web site. The rest is optional: I don’t check “Automatically follow people (new followers) who follow me from this point forward.” and I do check “Auto Unfollow”. You can save your account at this point and it will run by itself forever, or until you login again and change it.

4. Follow the instructions in this video:

This can seem a little complicated for any of you who may not be very computer savvy, but don’t fret, it is really very simple. Just watch the video and it takes you through it step-by-step. If you still have trouble, you can always enlist my help! Just email me at getfollowed@mycrowd.ca. You want to make sure that you utilize keywords in this step that pertain to what you do, what you sell, what you are interested in. This auto-retweet bot will scour Twitter for things that people say with the keywords you specify in them and then re-say them to all of your followers giving the original poster credit. So, you must make sure that you are only retweeting things that you think your followers would want to know or will find valuable.

5. Get Tweeting! There are a number of applications that can manage your Twitter usage, such as Tweetdeck or Tweetie. Talk to friends, and try to be as active on Twitter as you can. I know not every business owner has the time to Tweet all day, though, so coming up in the next few newsletters, I’ll explain how to make tweeting easier.
